I have a story for you. Once upon a time in my younger years my Mimi would make us her molasses crinkles to take home every time we'd go visit her over the holidays. This was a great idea because I LOVED those cookies, and yet my parents were in charge of the gallon-sized plastic bag of them. While it wasn't fun, they rationed them out to us over the following several days, making sure I would get my cookie fix but not put myself in a sugar coma. When I got a little older I ... continue reading...
Chewy Salted Caramel Cashew Clusters
Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers...that's the inspiration for this recipe title anyway. The inspiration for the clusters though? My pantry. The fact that I had leftover caramels. The fact that I had leftover marshmallows. The fact that I'm starting to get nesting syndrome in a bad, bad way and just want to clean everything out of our house and start over again. But alas, since I can't just toss all of our furniture I decided to cook instead. And the sugar ... continue reading...
Homesick & Nostalgic
Some people say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again expecting the outcome to be different when you know it won't be. I may be insane. See, long before I got pregnant I was missing home. I live in a beautiful place with incredible weather (today doesn't count) and tons of fun things to do. Colorado is a wonderful place to live, there's no doubt, but there's one thing it's not: it's not Texas. And because it's not Texas it just doesn't ... continue reading...
Coconut Lime Slice & Bake Cookies
I remember once upon a time my mom would spend literally an entire weekend at a time making plates upon plates of Christmas goodies. And me? Well, I helped her of course! Until the inevitable happened - the inevitable being that I got sidetracked by the television, a friend calling to talk, or a chapter of a tattered paperback Babysitters Club book. You know, by important things. But one thing I will never forget is how she always put all of her time and effort into making ... continue reading...
Garlic Gold
I have to admit, there are times when a company sends me something to try and I'm pretty hesitant to jump on the bandwagon and try it. It's not that I don't want to try things, but even as a food blogger who makes new things all the time I'm pretty set in my ways about things I love. BUT the second I was contacted by Garlic Gold to try their amazing products I was on board. Garlic. Sweet nectar of the gods. Adoy. It was a no brainer for me! When I opened up my box of goodies ... continue reading...
The Prenatal Experience
First up, here's my 27 week picture. Welcome to the 3rd trimester! Last night I had my first ever prenatal yoga class. Now going into it I expected a lot of stretching, a lot of breathing, and a lot of baby bellies. What I didn't expect was that I would WORK, that I would become frustrated with myself, and that I would leave feeling so empowered and sore. When I got there I set up my area with two blocks, a blanket, a bolster (which is a big tubular pillow essentially), a strap and my ... continue reading...
Pumpkin Dinner Rolls
Are you intrigued yet? I know when I first saw this recipe in the Good Cookin' from the Heart of Virginia Cookbook I immediately copied it down and sat on it for a while. See, Nate's not a pumpkin fan...but he has so many other good qualities that I forgave him for his pumpkin hatred. Besides, it always means more for me. Thing is, these dinner rolls are called biscuits in the cookbook which is the main reason I made them. Then they came out of the oven. Now I'm ... continue reading...
Simple Homemade Christmas Potpourri
I like candles. They're pretty and they usually smell great. But I have two problems with candles: They're usually expensive AND They require fire Now I know this isn't the Stone Age and fire isn't hard to come by, but here's the problem: I tend to fall asleep quickly these days which, coupled with forgetfulness, is not a good thing when fire is involved. Just think about it. So this past Saturday I remembered something my mom used to do around Thanksgiving and Christmas time ... continue reading...
Easy Turkey Bolognese
Once upon a time I stayed up too late and woke up too early. I swear this has only happened once. You know, in my whole entire life. And did I mention that because of said late-to-bed-early-to-rise situation I may be a tad bit sleepy? I mean, I know you guys - you're smart. You've figured me out. That's why I'm giving you something easy to make tonight for dinner. Because I'm tired and am projecting that weariness on to my beautiful friends, whether you like it or not. But ... continue reading...
Tangerine-Scented Quinoa Pilaf
First of all I have to show you guys this first photo because I bought a new citrus-juicer and I'm such a proud new mama. Look how pretty and rustic it looks with the tangerines! Plus it can kind of annihilate any citrus in a matter of shear seconds. Yes, I'm proud. So what? So last week I bought a huge bag of tangerines with the best intentions of eating every.single.one. They're so juicy and sweet - and then I realized that (GASP!) they have seeds in them. What the what?! ... continue reading...
Carrot Pineapple Muffins
As many times as I've made muffins for the blog in the past, I'm really not a muffin girl. I don't know what it is - the only muffins I ever really L-O-V-E-D were the blueberry ones my mom would make for us on Sundays. Or the too-big-for-a-linebacker Otis Spunkmeyer monstrosities that were covered in sugar and had loads of calories in them. Hey, don't judge - Otis knows what he's doing. The muffins are legit! Legit muffins or not though, these days I just can't justify eating ... continue reading...
This Thanksgiving I Learned…
That you actually will not fade away into nothingness if you don't eat Thanksgiving dinner. In addition to #1, a Thanksgiving dinner consisting of mashed potatoes and cheesecake really isn't all that bad. Really. There are a LOT of baby things out there and I feel like the fact that I'm totally clueless about at least 98% of it probably means that I don't have to have it. The baby likes to kick a lot now, especially when I eat, which I couldn't be more thankful for. It's like on ... continue reading...
