Well guys, I went back and forth on whether or not to write about this. Remember a few days ago when I went in for my 1-hour glucose screening? Yeah. I failed. Big, fat F. There's something about that word, 'failure', that can completely ruin the rest of the day. After chatting with the nurse and doing some research I've found that it's not necessarily due to my behaviors, my eating, or really anything other than the way my body is responding to the hormones that come with pregnancy. ... continue reading...
Cinnamon Apple Pear Sauce
Once upon a time I made applesauce like my mom's. And it was good...so very, very good. And then the next year rolled around and I decided, "HEY! I have pears that are ready to use...I'm going to make pear sauce!" Only that didn't happen. Mainly because I had apples that needing using too and I wasn't sure about the texture of the so-called pear sauce. So I did what any girl in this predicament would do - I used BOTH. Don't worry though, that's not all. I also allegedly, ... continue reading...
Apple Apple Donuts
Nate and I, for the past 5 years, have dubbed Friday "Donut Friday." I'm sad to say that we haven't always followed through on eating a donut on Friday (hey, a girl's gotta sleep in sometimes before getting ready for work), but thankfully there's a new addition in our house that makes it possible. I've named my donut pan. Her name is Freida. Now I realize it's not normal to name your kitchen baking gear - or even your baking equipment. Apparatus if you will. But ... continue reading...
The Conquering of the Baby Registry
I wish I could claim to be the conquering hero in our baby registry. But sadly, I can't even say that I'm the conquering hero in our wedding registry from almost 5 years ago. See, the problem comes from very little planning, very little question asking, and very little research. Thank goodness for Emma, her husband David, and my husband's incredible common sense. Otherwise Baby D may not have anything to ride in, sleep in, sleep on, or play with for a very long time. Although if ... continue reading...
Angelic Sugar Cookies
Is it just me or is it harder than heck to find a good sugar cookie recipe? See, due to my extreme cookie laziness I just can't handle the recipes that are ALL made to be rolled out and cut out with cookie cutters. Yeah, that's not happening. You want me to do all the mixing (which inevitably calls to add each egg one at a time - really? Never done that and I'm still kickin'). You want me to chill the dough. You want me to prepare a surface for rolling out the dough. You ... continue reading...
Two-Tone Cherry Pistachio Fudge
Get ready to have your fudge world rocked. You guys already know that I used to "help" my mom put together plates with cookies and goodies for our friends, teachers, neighbors and acquaintances. What I didn't tell you was that my favorite part of the whole day of cooking was making the fudge. OH THE FUDGE! We would start with condensed milk - I never really knew what it was or why, but that's what Mom said to do. Add some sugar, a little vanilla, and stirstirstir ... continue reading...
Coconut Gingerbread Loaf Cake
I know it sounds weird, but go with me on this. You'll be glad you did! I don't know about you, but I love toasted coconut. When I worked at a gourmet shaved ice place in my hometown (and yes, I'm serious...it was delicious!) my favorite flavor was toasted coconut. And when I learned how to make it myself? Watch out world...Heather's eating toasted coconut tonight! See, it's so easy to make! You take coconut, put it in a pan, and gently heat it til it's toasted. Pour it on ... continue reading...
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Protein Balls
I figure for our cookie basket this week I'll ease you guys in again, this time with something a little healthier. Now you guys know that I love my butter and sugar and cookies, oh my. You know that I will never flinch in the face of a good buttercream or a cheesecake or custards galore. But even the biggest sweets lover in the world needs a break from those things sometimes. Sometimes. And after this past weekend's baking spree, this is one of those ... continue reading...
About Working Out
Ah yes. Back when I was in shape! When it comes to pregnancy workouts I'll be the first to admit that I haven't totally kept the ball rolling very well. Sure, I walk every day - it's about the only thing that feels "normal" right about now. And as mentioned last week I've been doing prenatal yoga once a week to get my stretch on and fellowship with other mommies-to-be. For strength training I've been doing the workouts (2nd trimester workout is the best, FYI) on this DVD: But other ... continue reading...
Spicy Cuban Panini
So, how you guys doing with the sugar overload this week? You hanging in there? I hope so because next week is going to be THAT much better. Go grab a mug of black coffee (yes, black, because you won't be needing to add sugar or cream!) and get ready for it. It's not the season without a little extra sweetness, right? Right! But for now let's focus on something that you can make with your leftover Christmas ham. And if you don't have leftover Christmas ham then ... continue reading...
Spiced Sour Cream Pound Cake
Oh pound cake. How I love thee. I love that you're sweet but not too sweet. I love that you are dense and rich. I love that you go perfectly with anything - coffee, tea (side note - I LOVE the Celestial Seasonings Safari Spice Red Tea - I guarantee your world will be rocked), ice cream, Greek yogurt. I love that I can eat you all by yourself with nothing else. I love that you look the way a cake SHOULD look when you get cut ... continue reading...
My Favorite Christmas Decorations
When it comes to Christmas decor I tend to be a little picky and not want to put a bunch of stuff out. That's not to say if I had all the money in the world I wouldn't turn our home into a winter wonderland, but at this point in time a Christmas tree, a mantle full of lights, a few of our favorite ornaments and Christmas knick-knacks does just the trick for me! Take the snowglobe above - it's just hanging out on the mantle, but the moment the lights go on it's lit up and glorious. Who ... continue reading...
