Once upon a time I made applesauce like my mom’s. And it was good…so very, very good.
And then the next year rolled around and I decided, “HEY! I have pears that are ready to use…I’m going to make pear sauce!”
Only that didn’t happen. Mainly because I had apples that needing using too and I wasn’t sure about the texture of the so-called pear sauce. So I did what any girl in this predicament would do – I used BOTH.
Don’t worry though, that’s not all. I also allegedly, perhaps, might have used a little cayenne in it too. Why? No reason. I suppose I just needed a kick in the pants that day and, well, I think we all know that cayenne pepper will certainly get that job done. And considering the fact that we need to completely overhaul our garage and two of the rooms in our house, PLUS wash/brush our dogs, dust, vacuum, clean bathrooms and tackle a mountain (YES I mean MOUNTAIN) of laundry over the next two days, a kick in the pants is exactly what I need.
And a cleaning service. But the cayenne will just have to do!
Serve this over your favorite pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, or pork chop – or just eat by itself!
- 2 apples, your choice, peeled
- 2 green Anjou pears, peeled (I like these the best when they’re a bit firm – and if you have other pears, use those instead!)
- 1 Tbsp lemon juice
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 Tbsp cinnamon
- pinch of cayenne
Core and chop the apples and pears into equally-sized pieces, about 1/2 and inch or so each. Place in a small pot with a lid and add all of the other ingredients. Stir to combine and heat over medium low heat. Cover and cook for about 10 minutes, then stir. Cover and cook for another 10 minutes. Using a fork test for doneness with a piece of apple or pear – you want it to be soft, not necessarily mushy. Once they reach the consistency you prefer, remove from the heat and let cool slightly. Serve hot over any breakfast item, lunch item, or dinner item you want, or just eat by itself. Just make sure you eat it!
Methinks breakfast for dinner is a must-have tonight. Bring on the sauce!

tried it. was fast to make,
kids loved it as a topping to ready to heat waffles (vegan).
although i went with smaller portions, one pear, one apple (both organic), half the quantities of everything, and coconut sugar instead of brown sugar, it was well liked.
caramalized nicely in 8 + 8 minutes.
as a side, we added fresh cut strawberries and black berries.

We have an ancient gigantic jar of cinnamon that has lost most of its punch (its been around for as long as I can remember) that I have been forbidden from throwing away. I always add a pinch of cayenne to make up for the lack of heat from the cinnamon. Lately I’ve been grinding cinnamon sticks which we also have, but are definitely still pungent.

I love apple sauce, pear sauce. . .i make it myself sometimes but it dissapears too fast. I usually get the jar from whole foods and just eat right out it 🙂 Love how you added spice to it – would be perfect on some pork chops 🙂

Mmmm this is similar to the applesauce with pepper and maple syrup I make to serve over veal chops. Delicious! But never thought to serve the same with that kick over pancakes! Perfect!
