Simple Homemade Christmas Potpourri

I like candles.  They’re pretty and they usually smell great.  But I have two problems with candles:

  1. They’re usually expensive AND
  2. They require fire

Now I know this isn’t the Stone Age and fire isn’t hard to come by, but here’s the problem:  I tend to fall asleep quickly these days which, coupled with forgetfulness, is not a good thing when fire is involved.  Just think about it.

So this past Saturday I remembered something my mom used to do around Thanksgiving and Christmas time that made the house smell INCREDIBLE and didn’t require fire.  She made a quick potpourri out of orange peels and spices and let it sit either in a small crock pot ($14 at Walmart!) or, on occasions when she was going to be cooking a lot, in a small saucepan on the stove on warm.

I like this because it reminds me of home, smells amazing, and allows me to fall asleep without worrying about the fire issue.  And, well, you should like it too because it’s awesome 🙂

Simply remove the peel (as little white as possible) from 2 oranges – you can save the oranges and segment them for snacking!  Put those in the little crock pot or sauce pan along with a palmful of whole cloves, whole allspice, and 3-4 cinnamon sticks.  Cover with water and plug in the crock pot or turn the stove on to warm and let the smell work it’s magic!

Now tell me this doesn’t make your house smell like a Christmas party.  Or don’t tell me that…I may not believe you 🙂

Mmmm I love this! I used to – years ago – stick oranges with cloves and let them sit on the hot radiators and I adore the smell. It is so festive! I love your method…very cool!

I have that mini Crock Pot, and use it all the time. This is a great idea, Heather! It’s beginning to smell a lot like Christmas! 😉

I’ve never heard of this until just recently but what a great (and cheaper!) idea.
