New Abbey Banana Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

You guys know my beer story, but I've got yet another for you to marvel at. Not too long ago Nate and I had the following conversation: Me: Hey babe!  Guess what?  You are going to love me! Nate:  I already do love you. Me:  Well duh.  But you're going to love me more!  Guess who is getting to make something with New Belgium beers for Foodbuzz?! Nate:  Um...I guess you do. Me:  YES!!!  Aren't you SO EXCITED?!  I'm the best wife ever, right?! Nate:  Yep, you are.  I'm going inside...it's cold ... continue reading...

Duke’s Beach House

There are so many incredible restaurants in Hawaii, and the best part is that all of them use as much locally-grown and raised food as possible.  Duke's was one of those restaurants! I told you guys I was obsessed with Mai Tais!  So amazing...I love the sweetness from the juice and the sweet bitterness from the rum.  Heaven! We enjoyed a salad with local arugula, Maui sweet onions, locally raised bacon and beets, and Surfing Goat cheese.  Divine! Nate ordered fish (and I'm sorry, I ... continue reading...

Spicy Old Bay Croutons

As I'm typing this it's almost 6 o'clock in the morning.  And yes, I am craving Old Bay. You see, there comes a time in every person's life when they have to decide if they're man or mouse.  Do you want the Old Bay or do you not want the Old Bay?  If you say no to the Old Bay, we're friends...but I will have to shun you. Un-shun.  One day I'm confident you'll realize the error of your ways and fall in love with Old Bay like I did.  Just know that I believe in you.  Re-shun. Mustard, paprika, ... continue reading...

Scenes from Maui II

Let's just say that every evening before dinner was spent sipping wine on the balcony and watching people play in the water. It might also have been spent dreaming about how we could possibly move to Maui.  Just sayin'. ... continue reading...

Oreo Pudding Cake

When a recipe starts off with a picture like this, you know you're in the right place. Can you believe that when I was younger I hated Oreos?  Neither can I.  There were so many random things I disliked, and for whatever reason I was hellbent, for the longest time, on never eating an Oreo. I'm so glad I'm a (kind of) grown-up now! Despite what the name of this dish says, the cake has pudding in it, but it is not solely pudding.  It's a dense, moist cake with Oreo baked into it and chocolate ... continue reading...

Leilani’s

When we went to Maui on our honeymoon we stayed in Ka'anapali at the Westin and ate at Leilani's (virtually right next door) about 3 times - and every.single.time we ordered a Mai Tai, fish tacos, and Hula pie. This time when we went to Maui we didn't stay at the Westin, but we knew that we HAD to eat at Leilani's.  Bet you can't guess what we got though ;) OK OK fine, we got the same thing.  So what?  If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Shown below are some of the best nachos I've ever ... continue reading...

Bacon, Spinach, and Goat Cheese Fritatta

Fritatta.  Sounds fancy, but it's not.  Sounds potentially unhealthy...but it's not!  Well, not til I got hold of it that is. What do I mean by that you ask?  I mean bacon.  Lots and lots of bacon.  And I think that we all know what happens when you cook bacon:  bacon grease.  And I think we all know that onions sauteed in bacon grease?  Probably the best thing on earth. Bacon, it's time for your close-up! I can't count the number of times during the making of this meal that Nate talked about ... continue reading...

Happy Easter!

Dinner Last Night

Last night for dinner we had the simplest, most delicious meal in 20 minutes.  We just grilled some shrimp on skewers dressed with a little Old Bay seasoning, and on the side made a boxed wild rice with some sauteed onions, carrots, and peas. Now if only doing laundry were so simple.  Am I right or am I right?! ... continue reading...

Scenes from Maui Part I

I don't know if I've mentioned it, but I kind of love Maui.  A lot. In the 'Scenes from Maui' series I'll just be posting a couple of random shots taken along the way on our trip.  They are just reminders of the things I love about it! Enjoy! ... continue reading...

Mexican Hot Chocolate Cookies

Dear Heather-of-the-Past, I know you're scared of the bate bate chocolate (and I know you have no idea who Dora the Explorer is, but it's the same song you're learning in Spanish class right now).  I know you're scared of having chocolate with cinnamon, coffee (café), and spice to it.  I know you're scared of eating anything chocolate that doesn't have the word 'milk' in front of it.  And I know you're scared of your bangs - it's still scary when you grow up and look at pictures of ... continue reading...

Coastline

Another fantastic reason to visit Maui, or really all of the Hawaiian islands, is the coastline.  You'll see everything there: towering cliffs, white- red- and black-sand beaches, lava rocks, whales, other islands, massive waves.  The list goes on and on. That being said, the roads that we took to Julia's Banana Bread, Highway 30 and Kahekili Highway, boast some of the prettiest coastline I've ever seen.  I think the pictures will speak for themselves! ... continue reading...
