When a recipe starts off with a picture like this, you know you’re in the right place.
Can you believe that when I was younger I hated Oreos? Neither can I. There were so many random things I disliked, and for whatever reason I was hellbent, for the longest time, on never eating an Oreo.
I’m so glad I’m a (kind of) grown-up now!
Despite what the name of this dish says, the cake has pudding in it, but it is not solely pudding. It’s a dense, moist cake with Oreo baked into it and chocolate chips spread on top. It reminds me of a time before semi-homemade, 30-minute meals, and Paula Dean (although let’s get serious: Paula Dean is awesome and I absolutely adore her). It’s about using what you have on hand to make something really delicious, and if that means from scratch then more power to ya!
But if it means that you just stepped off a plane from the tropics into a week’s worth of rain and snow and all you want is a cake goshdarnit and you look in your pantry only to find a cake mix, two packages of pudding mix, and mini Oreos? Well, not that I know anyone like that – ahem – but if that’s like you then this cake is what you need to bring you back to your tropical vacation happy-place. Unfortunately it won’t transport you back there, but I’d say it’s the next best thing.
- 1 box yellow cake mix (you can certainly substitute one batch of homemade cake batter)
- 2 boxes instant pudding (I used chocolate and French vanilla)
- 3 eggs
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 1/4 cups milk
- 2 cups mini Oreo cookies (or 2 cups of crushed regular Oreo cookies)
Preheat oven to 350. Whisk together the eggs, oil, and milk. Stir in the cake mix and pudding mixes until just moistened. Fold in the Oreo cookies. Pour mixture into a 9×13 baking dish and bake at 350 for 45-55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. During the last 2 minutes of baking, I sprinkled chocolate chips on top and then spread them evenly over the top of the cake for a simple icing.
Oh the days when things like this weren’t called semi-homemade, but were rather just something delicious that was whipped up at home. Maybe I should try my hand at homemade Oreos, just to clear my name and my pantry of all things Sandra Lee-esque 😉
so fun! This looks like a delicious cake!
Oh my goodness! This looks heavenly! It is on my list to make for the weekend (or tomorrow!!)!!!! 😀

Homemade “oreos” are WAY better, but I don’t think you will want (or have enough) to add them to another recipe. Just saying!
Haha! Not very tropical, but hey, if it takes you to your happy place, then I’m all for it! I have ALWAYS loved Oreos. ALWAYS. Hope you had a lovely time in Maui!
