Week 7: Groovin’

7 weeks postpartum

I know I should be knocking on wood as I write this because as soon as I notice that maybe just maybe things are going (dare I say?) smoothly? It's all going to change. Regardless, the seventh week of Austin's life has started to bring about a little more regularity.   Remember how a few weeks ago I wrote about the swing situation? And said that he was napping better in the swing? That all changed the day after I pushed "Publish" on that post and we went back to him napping in his ... continue reading...

Toasted Sea Salt and Pepper Edamame

Toasted Sea Salt and Pepper Edamame

As I write this I'm working through whether or not I should actually go back to sleep (that notorious 'sleep when the baby sleeps' idea) or use this time to get some work in the not-so-off chance that this may be my only chance today to get consecutive hours to myself. If anyone tells you life doesn't change when you add another child to the mix, then they're lying to you. Read this post for a laugh and to really get what I'm talking about.   Things like eating have totally gone to ... continue reading...

Week 6: We All Have Needs

6 weeks postpartum

I am still very much in shock that we now have a 6-week-old on our hands again. For the millionth time, wasn't he just born yesterday?! Weren't we just in the hospital?! It all feels so close at hand and yet so far away; forget about the fact that I don't even remember being pregnant anymore. Which is probably a good thing.   Having a second child is a completely different ball game than having just one. The first time around I was in shock all the time, panic-stricken and Googling ... continue reading...

The Ultimate Fire-Roasted Salsa and Baked Tortilla Chips

There's a big thing coming up on Cinco de Mayo, and I don't just mean the actual holiday. That's the day that I find out if I'm cleared for exercise from my doctor...woohoo! I realize that's not nearly as cool as celebrating the actual holiday, but guys? I kind of can't wait. I may also have a margarita to celebrate...or maybe not. I don't need anything else making me tired!   So really, this salsa. I made it the other day with just a few ingredients I had in my pantry because I ... continue reading...

My Genius Lifesaving Mom Hack for Healthier Eating

#ilovesilksoy

Well, dear friends, as it turns out we have a cat napper on our hands, and I don't mean me. And I don't mean Wes. And I don't mean Nate or the dogs. Yes, it's true - Austin has decided that sleeping at night is OK, but during the day? For the birds. Earlier in Austin's life I was downing tons of bread, rolls, desserts and candy because they were the only thing I could grab with a baby in one hand, a toddler hanging onto my wrist and dogs following us from room to room. But that's not a ... continue reading...

Week 5: Getting the Hang of It?

5 Weeks: Getting the Hang of It #postpartum

Make note of the huge question mark at the end of that post title. Does one ever really "get the hang of" having kids? Maybe Michelle Duggar...maybe. This past week was a bunch of highs and a bunch of lows all tangled into one glorious 7-day stretch. Remember when Austin was 3 weeks old and he started smiling? Well this week he really bumped up the smiles, starting kind of giggling - which, by the way, is the cutest thing on the planet - and has been generally much more awake and aware. ... continue reading...

Maple Cinnamon Marscapone Spread

maple cinnamon marscapone spread || @heathersdish

So what'd you guys think of the candied bread stuff?! Pretty insane, right? I really can't recommend that enough, especially with the weekend being, oh I don't know, NOW. And if you're looking for a little somthin' somethin' to put on top?   Well, friends, I gotcha covered with that one! The great news is this spread is not only great on candied bread, it's heaven on bagels, smeared on pancakes, makes great waffles even better, and even works well on salted crackers. Heck, you could ... continue reading...

Honey Bourbon Candied Bread

Honey Bourbon Candied Bread || @heathersdish

You guys. I honestly can't think of how to even begin this post for you guys other than to say I had to text Nate yesterday and tell him to NEVER LET ME MAKE THIS EVER AGAIN. Because if there's any way to guarantee a massive weight gain post baby? It's leaving me alone with this goodness with my apparent lack of self control and sleep-deprived state.   OY.   In all seriousness though this recipe is STUPID good. Like, it's just silly how amazing it is. You are literally just ... continue reading...

Week 4: A Whole Month

4 weeks #postpartum

As I write this I'm laughing to myself because the past 24 hours have been a little more difficult, but honestly Austin's 4th week of life has been really fun. I am still, as always, shocked at how fast time is flying by. Austin is a lot more awake (when he is awake) and I just love watching him see things for the first time. It's seriously amazing to watch him discover things like Wes' face, shadows, lights, and sounds! There's so much more to learn, but that's part of what is so incredibly fun ... continue reading...

Strawberry Love

Strawberry shortcake for two plus MORE lovely strawberry recipes for Spring!

Y'all if there's anything that screams spring and summer to me, it's sun-warmed and sun-ripened strawberries. Growing up we had a small strawberry garden that was honestly the coolest part of our garden in those days; I loved watching the green berries slowly turn bright red, and the moment we were allowed to pick them? Magical!   I'm actually really picky about my strawberries, and most fruit in general. I don't love when they're mushy and super sweet - I like a teeny bit of ... continue reading...

Quick Italian Stew with Eggs

Quick Italian stew with fried eggs

Looky looky, a recipe! Truth be told this is one that I developed for Goldrich eggs before Austin surprised us by coming a week early, but it's also one that we've had several times and just continue to love. I think my next move may just be poaching the eggs IN the soup (WHOA), so if I choose to be brave I'll be sure to update this with the results. Sounds almost too good to be true...but we'll see! While soup may not be on the forefront of the mind during the summer months, this is still a ... continue reading...

Week 3: Smiling’s My Favorite

Week 3: Smiling's My Favorite #postpartumupdate

Admittedly I find it kind of silly that the title of this post talks about smiling, yet every photo in here is of my little bug sleeping. BUT! The reason is because (drumroll......) he's starting to smile!!! They're fleeting, but I'm not just talking about the milk-drunk smiles that are so adorable in the middle of the night. I'm talking real, actual attempts at smiling! This just started two days ago, and I have to say it's one of my favorite things (hence the title).   New mamas: ... continue reading...
