Good morning everyone 🙂 We’re about to head out for our “mystery trip” in a few minutes, but I thought I’d give you a quick recap of yesterday’s not.at.all.healthy eats!
Last time we talked, I told y’all about the smoothie I made yesterday morning. About half way through, I decided that I wasn’t enjoying it nearly as much as one should enjoy food, so I threw the rest of it out. To my delight, though, I found some pumpkin yogurt I brought the day before and hadn’t eaten! This was a site for sore eyes for sure. There’s 1/2 cup nonfat plain yogurt, 1/2 cup pumpkin puree, 1 packet of Truvia, 1/2 tsp of vanilla, and obscene amounts of cinnamon. This was just what I needed as a recovery from the smoothie!
Lunch was some leftover meatballs from our $10 lunch for two, with some string cheese on top and a slice of whole wheat bread with a slice of mozzarella. ‘Twas delish!
And (gasp!!!) a Vanilla Coke Zero. I love diet drinks. There, I said it. I don’t feel like I indulge in this too often, but sometimes the only thing in the world that sounds good is an ice cold Diet Coke!
Halfway through the afternoon someone unloaded a bag ‘o’ candy right behind my desk, so I snagged a raspberry Tootsie Roll pop. The dogs are super faded right behind it; I think they thought it was a treat for them!
And then (HUGE sigh) I realized that I forgot my workout clothes. MAJOR FAIL. What I thought was a pair of pants in the dryer that morning was apparently one of Nate’s golf shirts, and we didn’t have anything else to change into. I didn’t wear shoes that were conducive to walking a long distance, so I decided to hit up Home Depot, Marshall’s, and Whole Foods on the lunch break. AND I got a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger from Wendy’s…which totally made my stomach upset the rest of the day. What a bummer!
We got home and started doing laundry and packing, when we realized that we hadn’t eaten dinner yet. With no food in the house and nothing but fast food places close by, we decided on pizza from Papa Murpheys. Here’s a shot of the garlic bread:
I had 3 slices. Then we got a large 1/2 pepperoni 1/2 sausage pizza, which our oven mitt wanted to eat before us:
The mitt’s going after me! GAAAAAAAAH!!!
The ritual cutting of the pizza:
OH, and we got some cookie dough too…this post didn’t get it’s title from nowhere!!! I only had one because they certainly didn’t taste homemade…
To be quite honest, I’m really having to fight off the horrible feelings I’m having from eating so much junk yesterday. I know today’s a new day and whatnot, but I still feel like I overdid it. My biggest struggle this weekend is going to be eating healthful and sensible portions (and being satisfied with them) on our trip. I’ve asked Nate to help me with this, but if y’all could send healthy eating thoughts my way, it’d be much appreciated 🙂
I’ll be back later with some clues as to where we are, but in the meantime: Do YOU have any helpful travel eating tips? I’d love to hear them all, so I can pick up the phone and read your comments before I bury my face in some decadent Southern food (hint #1) 🙂

Its SO HARD to be good on the weekends. Hence why I indulged myself with some movie theatre popcorn. Right back on track today though, as you will be!!! 😉 We are always going to be too hard on ourselves!

Junk food days happen, don’t beat yourself up over it! I have my days where I definitely over indulge on different things but there’s nothing you can do about it afterwards except for learn from it to help you prevent it from happening again!
That Papa Murphys looks amazing, maybe instead of just getting the pepperoni and sausage get a meat (I know Nate like his meat) but add a lot of veggies to the mix as well. Also, if they have wheat crust get that instead.
One of my tips is when I go out to eat I don’t order an appetizer and if there is bread or whatever I tell the waiter not to bring it out (a tip I learned from the Biggest Loser last season) because then I already feel so good about turning down the bread that it makes me more motivated to eat well during my meal, or at least moderate the amount of food I eat.
Last tip…sorry this is so long, but always always always ask for a to go container right when you order. That way you can put half of it away (out of sight out of mind) and won’t be tempted to overindulge.
I find that eating bad foods isn’t horrible, but I try to add healthy components in there so I can get some sort of nutrient in my meal (hints the whole wheat crust and veggies on a pizza). I hope this helps! Love you!

Just pack lots and lots and lots of your own stuff to have when needed. And do the best you can with what you’ve got.

I seriously believe that there is nothing wrong with having a junk food day. I feel sorry for people who vow to never, ever again eat some pizza or store-bought cookies. A healthy life is about balance, not about never eating something again.
I don’t think you should feel guilty as long as you get back on track today. 🙂
My posted travel tips are entirely about avoiding gluten, but I think it’s easiest to stick with the 80-20 rule or maybe 75-25 rule on vacation – eat mostly healthy but don’t miss out on cool food you can’t eat when you get back home.
Have fun!

I am with you on the diet drink thing. I LOVE lo-carb Monster…awful I know…but it is good….
You are already practicing one of my best tips – don’t keep eating food if you are not REALLY enjoying it! That pumpkin yogurt looks delish!
The first bite of anything is always the best, it goes down hill from there. I get super focused on my first bite of food. If the first bite is not super yummy I stop eating it. If it IS super yummy, then pay attention & when the bites aren’t tasting as good as the first one I stop : )
Have fun on your trip!

heather! i love “blog stalking” you 🙂 i have 2 tips my 1st tip is to make sure that you are drinking plenty of water during the meal. while you are perusing (sp!?) the menu & waiting for the food to come – fill up your tank! and 2nd, dont forget to enjoy the whole ritual of the meal. you are with good company. i find myself scarfing the food sometimes – not having the good conversation or really noticing the food bc i’m eating so fast. the food wont run away! so take the time to soak in the ambiance of the restaurant, people watch & drink deep of the time of the company you are with – the food is tasty, but it really isnt as important as feeding your soul. plus you get to enjoy the meal twice when you take a “doggie bag” 🙂 hope you have a great trip!

My traveling tips are take your time when you read a menu, never be afraid to ask for a variation on an item.
