I think we all know how much I love pizza. I have not made that, nor my affinity for mac ‘n’ cheese, a secret on this blog. We will address that soon, but first we have another favorite: chocolate.
In case you haven’t noticed, I eat an awful lot of breakfasts that feature chocolate in them, and this is no exception. I also like to think that this on is “healthy” because it’s vegan as well!
- 1 cup almond milk (or milk of your choice)
- 1 frozen banana
- 1.5 Tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 Tbsp peanut butter
Blend until smooth and enjoy!
Now, that’s not the most filling breakfast in the world, but it did tide me over before devouring my massive bowl of lentils:
Yep, that’s the same dahl that I had the other day…only this time I used the ground coriander, and it made a world of difference! I got to leave work early to go pick up my parents at the airport, and was so excited to see them again 🙂 Look at my beautiful Mommy 🙂
Enter: California Pizza Kitchen. I clearly have liked this place for some time, what with it featuring my favorite food group and all. We all got water and shared some bread and butter before our meals came out. My parents each got the Asparagus Spaghettini:
Nate ordered the Jamaican Jerk Chicken pizza:
And I got the Wild Mushroom pizza:
Honestly, mine was very flavorful, but the mushrooms were overdone and rubbery. I kind of wish I had gone with my second choice, which was the Goat Cheese & Roasted Pepper pizza…but at least now I know otherwise!
Today we’re not sure what we’re doing, but I get to play with parents all day! Should be fun and I hope to take pictures 🙂 We just took the dogs on a walk, and Keira pulled the.entire.time. Granted, we haven’t worked with her on the leash much at all, but I’m seeing now that it is probably something that we should do.
So my question to you today is this: Dog owners (past, present, or future), what are your best tips for leash-training a dog? We will definitely make the time to train her (and Bunker both), but we don’t have hours on end to spend doing it every night. I’m open to any suggestions, tricks, tips, and equipment! 🙂

Those pizzas look amazing!
I’ve had many dogs in my lifetime (not currently), but none of them ever used leashes! They roamed freely on our property, lol.

I love CPK. Have you tried the pear Gorgonzola pizza? As for the dog although mine is only 14 lbs we taught her to walk better by pulling the leash in short then giving her a little more as she got better. Good luck!

Ohh I love good ol’ CPK! It’s my go-to place in NYC when I don’t want to go somewhere “cool” or fancy. Sometimes I really just crave restaurant chains because I never get to go to them anymore!

Your pizza looks good but I think I would lean towards what your parents ordered. That looks DELICIOUS! As does that breakfast of yours! Who cares if it really holds you over??? It has chocolate…and peanut butter. Clearly that takes precedence, haha.

We used a Gentle Leader type head harness, and our dog Archer HATED it. He would paw at it through the entire walk, and any time he was near a person, he’d stick his head between their legs trying to get the harness off. Not a great way to meet your neighbors! It did help a lot with pulling, but it just wasn’t worth it for us to deal with the hassle.
We recently switched to the Easy Walk harness, made by the same brand. It works great for us, and Archer seems to be a lot more comfortable in it. The hardest thing was getting it to fit correctly, but the store we bought it at was good about letting us exchange it until we got the right one.

Awe… your mom is gorgeous! You look just like her 🙂
The gentle leader helped with my dog. He’s over a hundred pounds so it helps a lot.

We use a harness leash. It has helped a lot but we have a basset hound and he kinda lacks shoulders, such short little legs, that it doesn’t fit him too well. It was still a huge improvement from the regular leash.
Our vet just recommended to us the Gentle Leader which is the leash that goes around their head. The idea is that they don’t have as many muscles and strength there so they can’t pull or be defiant. You just have to be gentle with them when they wear it because it is around the head area. The vet and vet techs swore by this kind.
Good luck!

I have a Boston Terrier and he has done really well on a leash thanks to my husbie! Zane started out by walking Winston on a very short leash. Every time Winston would pull Zane came to a complete stop. When Winston relaxed Zane would praise him and then move forward. Simple but worked for us!
Have fun with your parents!

Chris found this training method..I posted about it at the beginning of summer. We basically work with each of them one on one every day for only about 15min. They are SO much better. Kenna was NOT walkable before we did this. I forget what the method is called but you could see it working the first time we walked them. Basically EVERY time the dog pulls you change direction. The second there is tension on the leash you turn. Honestly it took about 10min to even leave our small front yard and we walked in circles a lot. When you first start you’re not supposed to try to “go” anywhere. Don’t try to walk them around the block or anything. This basically gets them to realize they have to look at YOU to see where they’re going next. They are not in control. We use a martingale collar on kenna that works great. It grabs her attention [but doesn’t hurt her]. Each time she would put tension on the leash we kind of snap it, say no, and abruptly turn and walk in a different direction. If she walks into me I knee her [obviously, not hurting her] to make her know I’m in control. We don’t do a “heal” command or anything but have had success with this. We’re now slowly working on taking them for longer walks and heading up to the park and then soon we’ll get to walking them together. Taking awhile but so worth it. Let me know if this sounds like something you want to try…I think I have a video clip somewhere =)

I have two different walking dogs. My Golden Retriever will walk fine on a leash and we have used very little training. My Choco Lab, pulls! She is younger (1yr old). We have gone to a harness with her that wraps around the body and the leash is connected under her neck/chest where there are two “O” rings that cinch. It keeps her on track when trying to train her to walk, although she wants to go. The harness is good because it does not just tug on their neck…it tugs on the whole body.
I try to play catch with her in the back to get her a little worn down, and then I try to run her. At that point she is not constantly pulling and we can run at a little slower pace and eventually walk near the end.
Good luck! Great pic of your mom…she is just as beautiful as you are!

er… not tried one ON myself. I meant tried one for the DOG, hahaha. 😉

The only thing that has worked well with my dog is going FAST. She’s really good on leash when we jog together and especially when she gets tired. Tired dogs are good dogs 😀
I’ve heard those special harnesses that go over their snout work pretty well for training, but haven’t tried one myself.
