[photo from The Influence Network] SUNSHINE. You guys, earlier this week it was pouring down rain for days on end and we had so much going on with the boys and doctors checkups and things to do - in the rain - and I just got so overwhelmed and tired and near crazy! And then? THE SUN CAME OUT. Yesterday was gorgeous and wonderful and I just felt infinitely better. Isn't it amazing how sunshine makes life better? We're going to be busy hanging out and being a family this weekend ... continue reading...
Whole Wheat Blueberry Lemon Muffin in a Mug
Show of hands: who finds those massive (see also: the size of your face) Otis Spunkmeyer muffins practically irresistable? You can't see me, but I'm waving my hands wildly in the air. I know they're not good for you, but those moist and crumbly and almost-too-sweet muffins are just so good. Have I told you guys that I love chicken Ramen noodles too? I have them about once a year, but I don't take it for granted. SO GOOD. Anyway, those muffins. When we were growing up and didn't know ... continue reading...
The 9×13 Dinner
Back in August of 2015 Nate and I dove headfirst into a Whole30 challenge, and y'all? It's called a challenge for a reason. We researched and planned our brains out, but nothing really prepared us for trying to do a challenge like Whole30 on a budget and with two kiddos in the house. Have I mentioned I'm still getting used to having two kids? Is this a lifetime endeavor? Anyway, there were times it was just so hard to figure out what to make for dinner that didn't break ... continue reading...
Parenthood as Art
I doubt it's a secret - many of you long-time amazing readers know me well enough to know that when I fall silent (even silent-ish) there's usually something going on behind the scenes. Anything from death to pregnancy to birth has caused me to fall behind in my recipe-making, photography, and ability to share as much as I normally do, and honestly? It's so hard for me to stop. To give in to the things that happen in life and relinquish control of even this one thing that I DO have control over ... continue reading...

Can we talk summer for a minute? I've so been enjoying spring that I totally forgot about what comes next: sweltering hot days, long hot nights, and trying to figure out the exact thermostat temperature that ensures we won't melt in our home but also doesn't drive the energy bill through the roof. Sounds fun, right? Even though those things aren't the best parts of summer, I'm actually really excited about this one. Last year A was still a newborn and so I was really hesitant to get ... continue reading...
Finding Grace in the Target Checkout Line
I'll be the first to admit that pre-baby Heather was fully devoted to the judging of parents whose children threw fits. Evil eyes on the airplane, angry scowl at the grocery store, annoyed sighing in any waiting room where children ran wild. I let everyone around me know that I was super frustrated short of actually saying something to the flustered parent. As I've come to find out these things come back to bite you in the rear. There's nothing more humbling than seeing your ... continue reading...
Double Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie
I have, for a very long time, been a hater of almost all protein powders. I feel like they're chalky (they are), overly sweet (blech), and never really leave me feeling better or healthier at all. I've long been a fan of adding cottage cheese to smoothies for an added protein kick; it adds a really delicious and creamy cheesecake flavor and texture. I'm still definitely a fan of that! BUT. Lately I've been really wanting to start enjoying smoothies for meals and not ... continue reading...
A Year Later: Acting on The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up
Right after I had my second child I was thrown into the swirling, fantastic, insanity-ridden vortex that is having two children. Not only was I figuring out how to nurse again, figuring out how to potty train, and figuring out how to show each precious boy my undying love for them - I was doing it all in a sea of Boppys, baby swings, newborn diapers, with wave upon wave of "YOU'RE A BIG BROTHER!!!" toys. All a huge blessing. All left me reeling. And it all pushed me to read, with a ... continue reading...

Yesterday I heard this song for the first time: In the eye of the storm // You remain in control // In the middle of the war // You guard my soul // You alone are the anchor // When my sails are torn // Your love surrounds me // In the eye of the storm // When my hopes and dreams are far from me // and I'm runnin' out of faith // I see the future I picture slowly fade away // And when the tears of pain and heartache // are falling down my face // I find my peace in Jesus' ... continue reading...
Velvety Asparagus Soup with Crème Fraîche
I tend to be a predictable gal with my asparagus. Roasted in a hot oven or grilled is usually my preference, not just for flavor but for ease of cooking. However, sometimes I like to branch out and make an unbelievably simple soup that satisfies all the senses. It has the beautiful combination flavor of leeks and asparagus, a vibrant color along with a velvety texture that makes it seem like more than just a few simple ingredients. From March 15 to May 5 asparagus is in season here in ... continue reading...

Happy happy weekend my dear friends! I'm going to make this short and sweet because I have no business being online when the weather is gorgeous and there's fresh air to breathe. But I hope you have a fantastic weekend, filled with love and laughter and bravery and compassion. And enjoy these links while you're at it! XOXO 1. Intrigued by these photos of abandoned NASA launch sites. Also, we saw The Martian last week and LOVED it! (Slate) 2. Man cold vs. Mom cold. Can't stop laughing ... continue reading...
On Feeding Our Second
I was hired by The Women Bloggers to participate in this campaign led by Kendal King Group on behalf of Nestle; all opinions are my own. I've known for quite some time that having two kids would be a challenge in almost every area of life. Whereas having one precious boy to dote on all the time felt like an all-encompassing job (it was), doubling the number of children basically quadruples the amount of work. I'm no mathematician, but those numbers don't really add up...except for it's ... continue reading...
