Roasted Pepper Pesto Potato Salad

Say that title 3 times as fast as you can. I dare you. When it comes to potato salad I have mixed feelings.  I mean, I like it because it has potatoes and traditionally has mustard and pickles.  I like that.   But, as Jessica said, mayo is of the devil (and thank goodness she inspired the roasting-the-potatoes-part of this salad!). Granted she didn't really say exactly that and I might be over-exaggerating, but the truth of the matter is that most people make traditional potato ... continue reading...

Get Grillin’!

If you guys know me at, which at this point you should, you know that I'm from Texas and you should know that I LOVE to grill (even though I've always called it BBQ'ing even if there's no BBQ sauce).  It's just kind of what you do to get out of the house and enjoy the summer where I come from!  When I saw that Marla and Dara are hosting a summer grilling series, I was more than stoked.  Here's one of my absolute favorite appetizers to make with perfect summer tomatoes and grilled ... continue reading...

Sweet Peach Snack Cake

I'm clueless.  Apparently so is Wikipedia. What in the world is the difference between a snack cake and a regular cake?  I can't imagine that it's the amount of sugar that goes into it; I've made real iced cake with the same amount of sugar or less.  What about the butter content?  I like to make mine with less butter, so maybe that's it.  But in all honesty here's what I think the real difference is:  the size of the slice you cut.   You guys know what I'm talking about...instead ... continue reading...

A Good One

I just felt like I should share that today is a good day! Plus this picture makes me smile since it encompasses the work and messiness of cooking that I love. So there's that too :) How about YOU? Good, bad, indifferent? ... continue reading...

Delta Bars

I've said it before and I'll say it again: there is something remarkably cool about beating egg whites. It's just so rewarding to go from that icky off-clear color to perfectly whipped foamy peaks in a matter of minutes.  Granted most of the time I do it with my mixer, but there have been a few times that I did it with a whisk by hand.   My arm was sore.  I don't really do that anymore.  Except when I didn't have time to workout. Has anyone ever heard of Delta Bars before?  I ... continue reading...

Adventures in Gardening

This year.  THIS was going to be the year.  The year that I grew my own tomatoes. And yes, I was fully (and am STILL fully) intending to do so with one of those upside-down hanging pots.   This was going to be the year.  Figures of canned tomatoes, homemade tomato sauce, gazpacho and salsa danced through my head as I planted the seeds, as recommended, into the brick of dirt.  I have to say, the "just add water" claim to gardening seems a little too good to be true.  But I believe ... continue reading...

Homemade Avocado Ranch

Here's a fact for you:  Texans love ranch.  And since I'm a Texan I think I would know. I just figured that it was a United States thing...I mean, who in their right mind wouldn't eat ranch on french fries, pizza, mozzarella sticks, and other varied fabulously fried foods? Then I moved to Colorado.  And got the weirdest stares when I asked for ranch on the side with my nachos and pizza.  You would have thought I'd turned purple and farted out loud. Yes, I just said "farted" on the ... continue reading...

Creamy Blueberry Lime Loaf Cake

When it comes to desserts lemon bars are my favorite. Like favorite favorite.  Legitimately the favorite.  I love them so much I want to make a giant one and sleep on it favorite. Was that last one a little too much?  My bad. Anyway, I love everything about them.  The tangy-sweet lemon curd, the buttery-sweet crust, the little bit of powdered sugar that you accidentally inhale up your nose that leads to suspicious glances from strangers.  What do you care?  You just ate a lemon and ... continue reading...

The [Almost] Healthy Elvis

I admit, I'm getting a little ridiculous. But the beginnings of this blog were all about balance.  Balancing  butter and sugar.  Running and yoga.  Cream and bacon.  You know, balance.   It's just what I do. Honestly though, there are times where taking a healthier route is not only better, it's just easier.  And I think we have all become well-acquainted with my laziness.  Some people say that necessity is the mother of invention; I say the desire to have more TV time ... continue reading...

Chocolate-Dipped Bacon

I didn't invent this.  Which means you can't blame me for showing you how easy it is. I mean, chocolate-dipped anything isn't that hard as long as you use good chocolate.  And by good chocolate I mean most chocolate in general.   Ever since I saw the $4 double-bacon chocolate bar in a shop in Austin I've been wanting to smother bacon in chocolate and have a field day.  Not gluttonously, but...well...I guess dipping bacon in chocolate is gluttonous on it's own.  Oh well.  The point ... continue reading...

Banana Chocolate Cake Tatin

I'm one of those readers. The ones that writers write for, the reader who transports herself into the story and has dreams about going into battle with the human race in Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.  I'm that girl.  (P.S. For anyone who cares they are coming out with The Hobbit in 2012.  I'm kind of geeking out).   So it should come as no surprise that when I read French Women Don't Get Fat I immediately made myself best friends with Mireille Guiliano and saw myself ... continue reading...
