Adventures in Gardening

This year.  THIS was going to be the year.  The year that I grew my own tomatoes.

And yes, I was fully (and am STILL fully) intending to do so with one of those upside-down hanging pots.

This was going to be the year.  Figures of canned tomatoes, homemade tomato sauce, gazpacho and salsa danced through my head as I planted the seeds, as recommended, into the brick of dirt.  I have to say, the “just add water” claim to gardening seems a little too good to be true.  But I believe it still.

You see, about two years ago in an urban farmer frenzy I planted and grew countless herbs.  Tended to them.  Watered them.  Gently rotated them to get enough sun.  Sadly plucked the ones that just wouldn’t make it from the planters in order to let the stronger herbs grow.

And then it hailed.  My herbs were murdered before my very eyes.  And to this day I am fearful of taking that much time to plant a garden again.

No, I don’t hold grudges…why do you ask?

And so, just so you know, the above picture is the planter right after I planted the seeds.  Incidentally this is exactly what the planter still looks like 2.5 weeks later.

I’m a little concerned.  Further results to come soon!!

I’ve contemplated the hanging upside down plants. I don’t know if I can do it, though. They are kind of weird looking. But fresh tomatoes are so worth it…. Maybe I’ll see if you have any success with them first. 🙂

Good luck! I just ripped out our tomato plants once again thanks to blossom rot 🙁 I give up!!! Herbs seem to be the easy way to go for me.

Even though it wasn’t funny, I have to admit that I laughed at the hail-murdered plant line. It hailed on our garden 2 days ago. I hope your upside down tomato plant grows big and is very plentiful!
