For now anyway 😉 Yesterday we started off with some more pancakes…turns out that Nate had a bunch of leftover mix from the camping trip, so we’re trying to use that stuff up before diving into buying groceries and whatnot:
The morning rolled right along, and before I knew it I was starving for lunch! I had the last of the lentil-corn-sliced steak combo…but y’all, when I was looking at the pictures it looked like dog food! Case in point:
I know. Ew. If it didn’t taste so good then I would probably have been pretty scared! Mid-afternoon I went for a walk and towards the end had to run back to the office because it was starting to storm on me. Turns out black clouds and lightning bolts do not a pleasant walk make!
When we got home last night we turned around and drove straight to Denver to pick up Nate’s cousin Jan and her husband Jeremy! We were so excited to see them 🙂 They had just finished a trip to Aspen to visit one of her good friends from college, and we were able to have dinner with them in Denver before they fly back this morning. We ended up going to Wynkoop Brewing Company! We started off with the artichoke dip that was served with beer bread triangles:
And I had a glass of Sagebrush Stout:
Mmmmmmmm, sweet chocolate-y coffee goodness right there! I loved that beer…and will now be looking for it in a bottle 🙂 For dinner I decided on the gumbo, even after our waiter told me it was huge and he never really saw people finish it. “Pfffffffffffffffft, like he EVEN knows me!”
He was right.
It was huge.
And I ate the cornbread and had to take the rest home. SCORE! Lunch for today! 🙂
In my opinion, this was some of the best gumbo I’ve ever had! It was packed full of shrimp, chicken, Andouille sausage, okra, and rice. Plus it was super spicy and made me sweat a little…that’s how you know it’s good 😉
What’s the most disgusting looking thing you’ve ever eaten? Was it actually good or did it taste how it looked? For me, the ugliest thing I ever at was also the worst thing I’ve ever eaten: corn smut. The name alone gives be chills of the grossed-out variety. When we were in Mexico when I was in high school, we went to this fancy dinner and my dad insisted that we try EVERYTHING, even if it was just one bite. The brought out the corn smut course (vomit), and come to find out that corn smut is the fungus that attacks corn, and they scrape it all off and mold it into a block and then slice pieces off. It’s a delicacy…an absolutely horrid delicacy! I always say that I have an iron stomach, but even writing about this is kind of making me woozy…
adorable picture the dog!
JUST got on here and LOVED reading your post!!! We had the best time with you guys on Sunday! Thanks so much for making it happen!! Food was really good but I must say, your pictures make it look even better!! WOW….nice job!!!
Love you Heather!!!! So glad Nate snatched you up!!
Mmmm…I love a good stout!
I love that dog picture!! Sigh…I want a lab!!!
I’ve heard that people ate that stuff, but I never actually met anyone who said they had. Growing up on the farm I hated when we were freezing corn for the winter and that stuff was on the corn, it just grossed me out to look at it let alone touch it. You are a brave girl!
Your food is very photogenic! Mine never looks good, but it tastes good. 🙂
That would a “Big Red Bean” Popsicle in Korea…it is actually made with Mung Beans….not a fan!

I love Palak Aloo … it’s Indian spiced creamed spinach with chunks of cooked potatoes. But it looks absolutely nasty. Like algae or something.
I’m sitting here trying to think of an ugly food concoction – probably would have to be a rice & bean mushy mix of some sort with smashed avocados – tastes amazing. Looks like poop. 🙂
I was trying out parsnip soup one time. It was horrible!! I now know that I HATE parsnips.
I’ve never even heard of corn smut! I can’t really think of the ugliest thing I’ve ever eaten, but there have been some.
I also love dark chocolately beers!
It is very hard for me to photograph split pea or lentil soup. It looks like a bowl of green mush – yuck. HOWEVER, they happen to be my two favorite soups! =)
I want pancakes and beer bread NOW!!!!!!!!! omg that all looks amazing!!!!
Thats so funny. Normally the ugly stuff tastes good to me. I think most soups, chilis, or anything in a bowl doesn’t look too pretty. Besides oatmeal or fruit or something. But always so yummy.
Yay for leftovers! And I agree the spice is what makes it good.
I didn’t see the dog at first…that is funny!
the most disgusting looking thing i’ve ever eaten is definitely my refried bean mixes. Everything about it screams cat food. Your corn smut definitely sounds way worse!
If it looked bad , I didn’t even try it.
I think oysters look gross and have never tried them!
