Sushi 'n' Ice Cream

The beautiful and inspiring Caitlin is on Faces of Beauty today!  Stop by and say hi!

As I write this I am fighting off the pre-vomit watery mouth like there’s no tomorrow.  Not fun, but even more so surprising since last night’s dinner was delicious and tasted fabulous!  And to be fair, I’m not sure if this is a result of the sushi, the ice cream, the combination of the two, or some other weird thing altogether.  PLEASE NOTE THAT I AM DEFINITELY NOT PREGNANT, so don’t freak out my husband by asking that in the comments 🙂

Hapa Sushi was the first place I ever tried sushi and is just about the only place I really get excited about eating it at.  It’s dark, funky, and always a lot of fun.  Plus almost every roll has a name with sexual innuendo…you have to love a place where your inner teenage boy can rejoice!

The first time I heard of someone eating seaweed salad I cried tears of sorrow for them.

Poor, lost souls…WHY oh WHY would you eat seaweed salad?!

And then I tried it.  I love the rich flavor from the sesame oil and the texture is just so fun!  Crunchy, slimy, and otherwise perfect.  Even in my nauseous state this morning I’m drooling just thinking about it.  It’s that good.

Next up:  spicy edamame.  Y’all, you will DIE and go to foodie heaven if you try this stuff!  It’s lightly steamed and served in a bath of soy sauce, garlic, red chili, ginger, sesame seeds & oil, and scallions.  And probably some other stuff that I don’t even know about.  My father-in-law is a veggie-hater through and through and refuses to eat anything green except iceburg lettuce and the spicy edamame at Hapa.  That’s saying a lot!

And now we get to the rolls and sashimi.  Drool.

From left to right there’s the shrimp tempura roll, seared ahi, tuna, yellowtail, the Mork and Mindy roll (white tuna, salmon, chives, mandarin orange), the LA roll (lobster, cucumber, avocado), and the spicy tuna roll.

So good, but I could only eat a few pieces after the massive quantities of seaweed and edamame already residing in my belly.  The Mork and Mindy was a new one we had never tried, and I loved the sweet addition of mandarin oranges!

But you guys, as much as I love the above mentioned menu items there’s really only one reason I like to go to Hapa.  And it’s to get a multiple orgasm.

No really, that’s why.

Get your minds out of the gutter!  I’m talking about a sushi roll 🙂

This is the richest sushi roll you’ll ever eat.  You will most definitely have an eye-rolling moaning experience.  And you will definitely want to share it with others.  This bad boy has cream cheese, crab mix, smoked salmon, is fried, and then covered with a cream sauce that will surely change your life.  Healthy it is not, but who cares?  You’re eating sushi in Boulder for crying out loud…live a litte! 🙂

After dinner we did what any self-respecting Pearl Street wanderer would do and went to Ben & Jerry’s.  Hey, I made sure I saved room for dessert…I recommend you do too!

There were so many choices, but once I saw the sign for the Bonnaroo Buzz ice cream I knew I’d found the one that my heart desired.

My life has been forever changed by this small bowl of creamy, caramely, whiskey-y goodness.  Nate, I love you but…I’m not sharing this.  Sorry.

I loved this photo…something about old photographs makes me stop and make up a story for what was going on.  Doesn’t this group of friends that opened the Boulder Ben & Jerry’s look fun?  Hey, I’d be pretty darn excited if I was opening up an uber-successful ice cream shop.  Just sayin’!

We had a seriously fun night, and are excited to go watch my sister-in-law play volleyball this evening.  She plays for OU (Oklahoma – not Ohio) and is starting conference play by playing CU!  Thank goodness the Big 12 is sticking around for a little bit longer.

Happy Wednesday y’all!

Agh, sorry you’re sick! I have yet to try Sushi again (bad experience a few years ago) but must admit that does look pretty tasty. If nothing else, I’ll go for those foodie-heaven edemame beans 😉

Fun little fact: Ben & Jerry were Penn Staters. Whoop! heh

I’m sorry you’re not feeling well. 🙁 But that sushi looks awesome!!! Have you ever had the salmon roe? It’s awesome with a quail egg on top. 🙂 Same with the red bean mochi icecream! 🙂 (NOT with the quail egg though). Now I’m thinking sushi for lunch is in order… mmm!

I have to say I got the worst stomach ache of all history the night I had sushi + a beer + gelato. It all tasted amazing at the time but my body was not having it.

“PLEASE NOTE THAT I AM DEFINITELY NOT PREGNANT, so don’t freak out my husband by asking that in the comments” That cracked me up because I have to put the same warnings on my blog sometimes. Lol.

I have really been wanting sushi – tonight will be an epic battle between doing something with the zucchini and mushrooms in the fridge or trying to convince the bf that I’m not getting enough of those essential omega-3s …wish me luck 😉

I’m going to come out there to visit you and to go on the exact same night out. Even if we end up with tummy aches it will be worth it. I’ve never tried seaweed salad though. But I trust your judgment.

Hope you feel better my knocked up friend!

Can you believe I have never had sushi with fish? I always have California or cucumber rolls. I’m a wimp. But you know, when you have a food poisoning experience it’s hard to take chances!

mmmMMMmmm…Ben & Jerry’s. I used to be a tour guide at the factory in VT…we got three pints of ice cream EVERY DAY that we worked…for rizzle. My freezer was full.

Isn’t it funny that when we women get crazy cravings we immediately have to put in the “not-pregnant” disclaimer 🙂

And I personally don’t think sushi and ice cream is weird, you’ve actually just created a craving right now!

I just tried Bonnaroo Buzz a couple weekends ago at the Ben & Jerry’s in Bel Mar and I loved it! Of course, once something says whiskey, I’m pretty much on board, haha 🙂

Was that intended to make us come to Boulder this weekend as a tease!?!? Now I’m craving sushi 🙂

Still deciding…can’t cancel our hotel because Priceline sucks, but not sure it is worth 2 weekends in Boulder since we have to come up again for when the race is rescheduled!

Ack! I was with you up until the last sushi roll. I was formulating my comment in my head… “I love seeing real sushi on blogs! I hate restaurants that specialize in deep fried cream cheese rolls and dare to call it sushi!” And then… ooops… Well to each her own, right?

Sorry you’re not feeling well. Hope you get better soon!
