Playing Hooky

Julie is on Faces of Beauty today and looks radiant!

Even though I’m sure it’s not technically “playing hooky” when your boss and the office knows that you’re going to be gone, the little rebel inside of me likes to think that yesterday we played hooky all afternoon.  The truth is we were spending some time with my father-in-law who was in town to come watch my sister-in-law play volleyball.  Who’s my sister-in-law you ask?  Her name is Chrissy:

I get that look a lot…not quite sure why though…

Anyway, we got to meet up with her and the rest of the University of Oklahoma volleyball team at the Spicy Pickle in Boulder yesterday.  Warning:  the pickles really are spicy! Not that I minded, but you know it’s good when your tongue goes numb.  I ordered the Yard Bird, which was roasted chicken, bacon, fresh apples, bleu cheese, and honey mustard.  Commence drooling now.
Nate and I split some chips:

Annnnnnnnnnnnd we also “split” a Diet Coke.  And by split I mean he had approximately 3 sips and I had approximately 3 cups.  Oops.

After lunch Chrissy and her team had to go prep for the game, so Nate and his dad and I drove/walked around Boulder and did some shopping.  It was hard work I tell ya!  We rejuvenated by hitting up one of our favorite breweries:

Can you guess which one is mine?

If you guessed the Devil’s Thumb Stout you’d be correct!  I actually tried to branch out and try their Oktoberfest beer, but they were out.  You snooze you lose!

After beer-30 we headed over to the University of Colorado campus and settled in for the match.  We’ve been extremely blessed that BOTH of our sisters have had teams in their conference in Colorado so that we can at least watch them play once every season.  Please note how good of a fan I am:  calm, cool, collected.

And how opposite my sweet sweet hubby is.  Nate, I think you might need to work on your sports fan etiquette 🙂  (In reality it’s the opposite…I tend to get a little competitive and worked up…oops again.)  I also found out that one of the girls I used to coach 2 years ago is starting for CU!  I like to think I taught her everything I know, which means that I’ve now taught 3 successful collegiate athletes everything I know…my sister Salah, Chrissy, and now Nikki 🙂  It’s true!

Girl’s got ups!

The after-game photos.  I’m 5’10” and look like a shrimp in this picture…

Dad + daughter

Brother + sister

After saying our good-byes we headed out to grab a late dinner at Pasta Jay’s in Boulder.  Now y’all know I love Italian food, and out of all that I really love pasta.  I was basically in heaven here!

I ended up ordering the Baked Lorenzo, which was linguine in a tomato cream sauce with Italian sausage and melted cheese.  I think I need to eat salads for the rest of my life to make up for this one…too bad that’s not happening!

Nate got a cracker-thin crust pizza with pepperoni and sausage (and also ate the rest of my pasta)

And his dad got the veal parmigiana:

And even though we were all stuffed we also split the Nutella gelato.  Hey, you would’ve done the same thing!

It was great to see family, take some time off from work, and enjoy some amazing food, but I have to say that I might be ready for nothing but roasted veggies for a week now!  My poor tummy isn’t cut out to handle all that rich food.  No more hooky now though…off to work I go!

Happy TGTF – Thank Goodness Tomorrow’s Friday!

Big bacon and chicken sandwiches, BBQ chips, volleyball, and Nutella gelato – you just somehow summed up all my favorite things in one post.

Are you a dark beer fan? I love dark beers with foamy tan heads like imperial stouts, oh my goodness they’re like coffee and chocolate. One of my favs is Old Rasputin.

I didn’t know you were 5′ 10″! So am I! That’s rare in a woman. Not as rare as your sister in law’s height though. I played volleyball throughout junior high and high school (center) so it’s really fun to look at your pics of the game;)

Playing hookey even if it’s not officially hookey is one of the best things. I like to do it everyone once in a while and just hang out in coffee shops 🙂

I think you’re now the blog my husband is the most willing to look over my shoulder and read. Sooners and Boulder? Two things he loves just about as much as he loves me.

(he got really excited about Pasta Jays-“that’s where you’d take your parents when they’d visit! it was s good!”)

Walnut Brewery!! We almost went there when we visited, but ran out of time and went to the small brewery in Lyons instead (which was awesome, but I still wish we could have gone to Walnut, too).

And all your food posted looks so flippin’ good…
