Happy Galentine’s Day everyone!!!
See here’s the thing: I don’t post on Saturdays unless there’s something important going on. It’s weekend time – time for resting and time away from the computer.
But today is indeed a special day – it’s Galentine’s Day! A day to celebrate the women you love. The women who inspire you and push you to be better. The women who speak truth into your life, who lift you up, who make you better. We all need those women in our lives, and there’s really no better way to celebrate than Galentine’s Day. We’re talking delicious food, drinks, and TIME dedicated to friends. Not too shabby, amen?!
Hula pie is this insane dish that I’ve only ever seen in Hawaii (shocker with that name, right?) and here’s what it is: an Oreo crust, macadamia nut ice cream, sweet cream ice cream, and then a ganache and/or whipped cream topping.
WHOA WHOA WHOA.
It’s so silly good, very very decadent, and as it turns out? Not hard to make! It’s just one of those recipes that has a few steps, but the hands-on time is really minimal. You’re basically letting your freezer do all the work!
And I say? If you’re making it for the women in your life who make your life sweeter then it’s all completely worth it. Y’all enjoy!
HULA PIE
Serves 8
Ingredients:
For the crust:
- 25 Oreos
- 4 tablespoons melted butter
For the macadamia nut ice cream:
- 1-1/2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup milk
- 2/3 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup dry roasted macadamia nuts (unsalted)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- pinch of sea salt
For the sweet cream ice cream:
- 1-1/2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup milk
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- pinch of sea salt
Use this recipe for the ganache – Ina is always on point!
Directions:
- First make the crust by crushing the Oreo cookies in a food processor and mixing with the butter until totally combined.
- Press the crust into a 9-inch pie or cake pan, making it as even as you possibly can.
- Refrigerate while you make the ice cream.
- To make each ice cream base, combine the cream, milk and sugar in a small saucepan over medium low heat.
- Stir frequently until the sugar is dissolved.
- For the macadamia nut ice cream, add the vanilla and macadamia nuts and stir to combine.
- Allow the nuts to cool in the mixture.
- When the bases are cold, church them separately according to manufacturer’s directions until they are the consistency of frozen yogurt.
- Spread the macadamia nut ice cream in the prepared pie crust, then spread the sweet cream ice cream on top of that, mounding it up in the middle.
- Freeze for 4-6 hours, or overnight.
- Right before serving, make the ganache and allow it to cool almost to room temperature before pouring on top.
- Serve cold and enjoy!

You made two different homemade ice creams for this hula pie? And a ganache! What an impressive dessert, Heather! It’s a big AMEN from me!

I LOVE Hula pie. Shocker, I know. There is a restaurant in Santa Barbara where I grew up that is beachy themed that serves it. And I had it there first before I ever had it in Hawaii. Love that you made it. Happy Galentine’s Day, Heather!

Heather, how have I never heard of hula pie before?! My life is obviously missing something very important. This looks amazing! I can never ever say no to a frozen ice-cream based dessert, especially when it includes flavours from the island. Thank you so much for joining us today and making an exception to your no Saturday posting rule 🙂 Happy Galentine’s Day!

Um, I’m still trying to get over the phrase: Macadamia Nut Ice Cream. How did I never know such a thing existed? This looks outrageously good and perfect for celebrating with the ladies. I love the reminder to take time to show some love to the amazing women in our lives. Thanks for joining in today!
