8 Simple Steps to Start Cleaning Up Your Skincare and Home gives you quick, actionable tasks to take to start cleaning up your personal care products and your home!
My dear friends, if I’ve said it before I’ve said it a million times: YOU deserve to live in a world where safer products are the rule, not the exception.
However, at this point in time that’s not the case. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible, and it also doesn’t mean you’ll give up your entire life to do it!
Every little change counts in reducing your toxic body burden (the total accumulation of toxins in your body), and so many of them are easy to make! I want this newsletter to be informative and something that you’ll save and look back to as you continue to rid your home of harmful and questionable products!
I snagged this screen shot from the movie Stink on Netflix, and while I’ve already learned a lot of this information it made a huge difference when I saw it in a visual context.
I know in my own family I can list multiple people who have suffered or are suffering from every single condition on this list. Is it attributed to chemical exposure alone? I’ll never know. But I do know – and studies have shown – that pre-existing genetic conditions are only exacerbated by exposure to toxic chemicals.
One of the reasons I jumped in head first with Beautycounter was because I saw the gaping holes in what I thought to be true (“I can trust that companies are doing what’s right for me” and “The federal government has policies in place that protect us from things like toxic products”), but weren’t. The last federal law that was passed regarding health and safety of personal care products was in 1938, with a few additions here and there. The personal care products industry, which is a multi-billion dollar industry, is essentially governed by 1-1/2 pieces of paper that are over 70 years old. Since 1938 we’ve introduced over 80,000 chemicals into the marketplace, most of which have little to no data as to their safety in regards to human health. That is terrifying! Especially when we can all list off people we know who have suffered from things that have direct correlations to those very chemicals.
It’s not all doom and gloom, though, but it’s important to know our starting off point so we can move forward and do better. That said, let’s check out a few things that we can do TODAY to make a big difference!
Have questions? Need clarification? I’m always happy to be a resource for you – and I’m on this journey too! Let’s jump in together, shall we?
- For starters, watch the movie Stink on Netflix. Your eyes will be opened big time!
- Download EWG’s Healthy Living App on your phone and bookmark the SkinDeep database website on your computer.
- Say ADIOS to all of your products containing the word “fragrance.” Yes, it’s scary to think about, but I can promise you that scents are not worth the physical implications they can have.
- Run the rest of your products (cleaning and personal care) through the Healthy Living App. Don’t see it in the app? Look up the ingredients list for your products and copy and paste each ingredient into the SkinDeep database. Yes, it may take a few minutes, but it will be worth it!
- Use the same app to look up better, cleaner options. I recommend using unscented cleaning products, and then use essential oils to make your house smell yummy (Young Living, DoTerra and Plant Therapy are great options).
- Look into cleaner scents for yourself – I love Phlur, and you can get a discount code for a sampler set of their scents here!
- Change your personal care products to safer with Beautycounter. Even if I didn’t have a Beautycounter business myself I would invest in their products because I respect their complete transparency and love their continuous contamination testing.
- Keep learning. I hate making it sound like companies are out to get the consumer, and I don’t always think that’s the intent. I do know that many prioritize profit over the end consumer’s health, and at the end of the day WE are the ones in charge of doing the due diligence of research.
While changing over all of the products you surround yourself with can be daunting, this is one of those “eat the elephant one bite at a time” situations. YOU GOT THIS – and as you start voting with your dollars companies will start to take notice. A safer future is in the cards for all of us!
