It seems like overnight our little man has developed SUCH a personality! He’s such a sweet little boy, full of smiles and giggles and snuggles, but he’s certainly not shy with letting us know when/if he’s unhappy in any way. Is that a second child thing? Like you have to be very outspoken to get a work in edgewise? I wouldn’t know since I’m a first child and I don’t remember how my sister was when she was a baby!
Friday was our 2-month well check appointment and everything went great! Austin is over 15 pounds, which is huge, and was such a champ with his first round of vaccinations. Momma cried longer than he did! Also when I look back at the photos of Wes at this age? That onsie has long been retired at this point! Seriously, HUGE baby on our hands!
Austin has started giggling a lot more lately, and has actually started having some fluctuations in his voice like he’s chatting with us. It’s so adorable, and has his big brother laughing too! He also has started reaching for things! Yesterday I had him on the play mat and he started reaching for the toys; he got this little determined look in his eyes and actually reached out and grabbed what he was looking at. It’s just so fun to see him learning and growing, especially when for so long he just ate, played and slept. Seeing new things happen makes all the long hours and the crying and the worrying that much more worth it.
I’m trying to figure out how to navigate a super-hot summer with an infant and a toddler. I know that sounds so random, but honestly the heat plays a huge factor in the things we can and can’t do. Last summer we were at the pool literally every day to get through the hot season, but that’s just not possible this time around. I’m getting a sprinkler tomorrow to put in the yard that Wes can run through while Austin and I sit in the shade under a fan, and we’re all downing ice water like it’s our job. I know everything is just part of this current season, but I kind of can’t wait to see my boys splashing around in the pool together. It’s going to be so fun to see them interacting!
This past week was the first full week that I’ve really eaten well and worked out consistently, and it felt great. I feel stronger already, I can tell a difference in the way clothes are fitting again, and while I wear old junky clothes around the house most of the time I just started to be more confident again. It was nice, to have that small semblance of feeling like myself again. The newborn phase is so sweet and beautiful, but it’s also incredibly hard too. I already miss parts of it, but so look forward to playing more with my guys!
Another quick note: I’m working on some fun stuff to keep Wes entertained and learning this summer and I’m just so excited to purposefully take time out to teach him. We just joined ABCMouse.com, we’ve started going through some lessons on reading (which he is GIDDY about), and we’re working on some super super super simple math too. That desire to watch my babies learn is continuing into the toddler and preschool years, and it never gets old. I’ll share more about what we’re doing if anyone’s interested!!!
Finally, a couple weeks ago I started talking about minimalism and my desire to truly start simplifying our life around here. Honestly I haven’t taken a whole lot of steps toward those measures with the exception of planning, but as Austin and Wes become more independent I’m hoping to do a whole series on how we’re removing the clutter and introducing more purpose to our home. I know it’s going to be imperfect, but I just know that our story can help encourage, even in the small things like clutter removal. I hope y’all will join in!
Much love,
Heather

Haha, it is definitely not just a second child thing. Our girl (12 weeks!) is not shy about letting you know when she’s unhappy at all!
