Summer is quickly approaching and if there’s anything that spring break has taught me it’s that we are closing in on a perfect time to really start teaching my older son ways to become more independent. In the hustle and bustle of getting ready for school every day it is just so much simpler for me to take care of things like making breakfast, packing his backpack, and picking out his clothes. It’s our first Kindergarten year (‘til the younger one starts in a few years) – I blame it on the fact that I’m a novice.
However, this summer we are going to be doing a whole lot of growing up – all of us!
First up on my list is helping my son learn how to make his own pancakes. I know I’ll still be helping him do the cooking, or supervising at the very least, but giving him the freedom to do the mixing and pouring himself only gets both of us one step closer to having another cook in the house…and maybe even a fully hot cup of coffee for Mom in the morning!
When I saw these awesome Ziploc® brand Sandwich Bags featuring the Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War characters then I knew I’d found a way to really make him fall in love with having more responsibility. superheroes have to learn how to make their own power pancakes after all! We teamed up together and came up with a plan for how to make pancake-making fun and easy, and I think this summer our kitchen is going to be a pretty spectacular place to be!
Now most of the time I post recipes on here, but I’m going to be 100% honest and let you know that when it comes to pancakes, I don’t do the from-scratch thing. There are so many great mixes out there, so choose the one that meets your family’s dietary needs and desires to make it as easy as possible. Right now we are loving a Paleo mix where you just add water, which makes it even easier for my guy to measure and pour. We figured out how many pancakes he eats and then measured out just enough mix in each bag to achieve that number. A tablespoon of mini chocolate chips adds just enough sweetness and makes them super special, and then a quick seal makes it simple to store.
In the mornings he can just grab a bag, measure out his water, and reseal (did you know that Ziploc® brand Bags are the easiest ones to seal and reseal? Truly they are – this is kid tested in my own kitchen!). A bit of squishing around does the trick to mix, and they’re ready to pour! Next, I help him snip off a corner of the bag so he can create his favorite pancake shapes. A quick flip and then breakfast is done!
I love that it takes us both about 5 minutes on the weekend to make sure he’s stocked and ready for the week ahead, and that with every pouch he grows more confident in his own abilities. All from a Ziploc® brand bag!
