I’ve mentioned before the ever-present issues that Nate and I have had when it comes to decorating our home. The fact that we didn’t even think to talk colors or patterns or assess needs when we registered for our wedding gifts, the fact that we felt all the things had to be in place immediately after moving somewhere, and the fact that clearance sections at stores have always grabbed our attention – well, all of those things together make for a home that’s not very put together. When we moved in to our new house at the beginning of March the first thing we said was that we wanted to make this place LOOK like the home it FEELS like. We really wanted it to be a reflection of our style, our family’s needs and overall to be comfortable to live in.
Now the fact that we made some iffy choices in the beginning doesn’t necessarily roll over on to all of our purchases, and we are so very proud of some of the selections we’ve made when it comes to larger items. Our couch, for example, we mulled over for months and months. We’re tall people, so we wanted something that was large enough to comfortably seat all of the long legs. We love neutrals, so we wanted something that would stand out but also match a lot of different things. And we wanted something that was comfortable, because whether we have friends over or are just snuggling the night away, comfort is of the utmost importance.
When we moved in we had a super old, super worn coffee table that we knew had to go, but we took our time looking for a new table because we wanted it to be just right. The right height, storage space underneath, and something that would go with different pieces of furniture. Suffice to say when we found the right one, we scooped it up as fast as possible!
Another thing that took some time was finding a rug that we both loved. Our walls in the house are a really pretty grey color, our furniture is brown, and we both love color. Nate was leaning more toward neutrals, but I found one that had huge, bright splashes of flowers all over it. Finally, though, we came across one that was the right size, right price, and had a combination of the color I wanted and the neutrality Nate was looking for. DONE!
If I’m being honest, taking time to really decorate our home well is driving me kind of crazy, but with each new find I see it come together more and it makes it all worth it. Can I divulge a little secret? We’re being even more discriminatory with the wall decor to the point that we have MAYBE 4 things hanging up in our house at the moment. That’s right, 4 months later there’s still no art work on the walls…but that’s OK. See, when I visited Havertys last fall for a decorating workshop I got some really great tips – all of which relied heavily on choosing what you really LOVE to put in your home.
That means things with a story, things with memories, things that reflect the true heart of a place. And it means that I don’t get to just buy a billion random things, but it means that our little house really looks like a place we WANT to be.
I have had such a great experience learning from the folks at my local Havertys, and the great news is that all of the stores have some really great bonus discounts coming up soon from July 22-August 3! Plus if you’re a fan of any kind of sport, August is being deemed Fan Cave month. I honestly can’t wait. I mean football season is getting closer and you can bet we’ll be enjoying a few games in our own fan cave!
As for the rest of the year our goals in the house are to be creative, be inspired, and keep taking our time putting it together. With no plans to move anytime soon we want this place to be one that continually grows with us, that evolves as our family does!
