Ever since I’ve become aware of the need for safer personal care products one of the biggest ones on my list has been deoderant. I wear it daily, apply it immediately after showering (when my pores are larger and able to absorb even more of what’s in it), and it’s definitely a need. That being said and known? I had no idea where to start, who to trust, or what would actually work.
Below are the four top contenders with their pros and cons, and in the order in which I tried them!
TOM’S OF MAINE NATURAL LONG LASTING DEODERANT IN WILD LAVENDER – $4.29
PROS: Honestly, other than it smelled nice in the tube and it was priced closer to traditional deoderant.
CONS: It was crumbly in texture when I applied it, didn’t really soak into my skin, the scent didn’t last long at ALL, and basically? It didn’t work for me.
FINAL THOUGHTS: I won’t say this is a bad one, but it certainly wasn’t my cup of tea and didn’t work with my body at all. I wouldn’t recommend this one to anyone!
SCHMDIT’S NATURAL DEODERANT IN BERGAMOT & LIME – $8.99
PROS: Y’all this smell is basically vacation in a little plastic tube. I would truthfully just smell the deoderant from time to time! Definitely a little easier to apply than Tom’s, and still priced decently (mine was less and I bought it at Target).
CONS: It was still crumbly when I applied it, although not as much as Tom’s. The scent was great but didn’t last as long as I would hope. I liked that I could just walk into Target and pick it up off the shelf!
FINAL THOUGHTS: Still not great, although better than Tom’s in my opinion. I found that if I “warmed” the deoderant by holding it on my armpit first before applying it then it helped keep the crumbling at bay. That being said I felt like the crumbling was less than ideal for the price.
PRIMALLY PURE DEODERANT IN LEMONGRASS – $12.00
PROS: I feel like this was kind of the Cadillac of clean deoderants. The packaging was clean and easy to use, super smooth texture, great scent, effective. Basically it checked all the boxes for me except…
CONS: …the cost. It’s $12.00 before tax and shipping, and while I love it and completely understand that the world we currently live in means that cheap toxic junk is more expensive? Well, that’s just a lot for deoderant.
FINAL THOUGHTS: If you can get past the cost then go ALL IN with Primally Pure’s deoderant! I really enjoyed my experience with it!
PRIMAL PIT PASTE IN LAVENDER – $8.95
PROS: This one is my favorite because it smells great, lasts a long time. works well, is a great deal, and I can find it locally and online. Kind of a win all around!
CONS: The actual act of rubbing the deoderant into my pits with my fingers is still a little weird, but you get over it after a while.
FINAL THOUGHTS: This one is the deoderant I’m currently using and likely the one I’ll stick with because it checks all of the boxes and is cost effective too. Plus I love that I can go to almost any store and buy the ingredients there myself. Not too shabby!
Happy shopping y’all!

Hi Heather! I use the Primal Pit Paste too! Only, in the stick form and not the paste. I found it at Whole Foods after overhearing a shopper tell her friend, “this stuff is awesome.” After she left the aisle, I swooped in and purchased it for myself. Love it! And yes, I’ve gone through about five different other “clean” deodorants. Thanks for sharing!

Oh I didn’t even think to look at Whole Foods for the stick version! I’ll have to check that out – that’s honestly my only “complaint” about it!!!

I recently switched to natural deodorant and there is definitely a learning curve to it! I tried Schmidts and fell in love with the scent but had the same issue with it being too crumbly. I reached out to the company and they said warning it up under your arms for a few seconds was key in application. I also got the jar version in Schmidts and am obsessed with that!

Yes, I noticed that when I held it in one place to warm up it applied so much easier! Do you think the jar version works better than the stick with Schmidt’s?
