Smoked Pecans

Here’s a little secret for you:  I used to hate pecans.  HATED them.  I didn’t know the flavor and thought they looked funny and didn’t think they were worth eating unless coated in sugar and baked in a pie.  Pie will change the flavor of most things for the better.  HOWEVER, I’m not afraid to admit that I’m wrong, so when I was making a list of holiday treats I wanted to share with you guys I immediately thought back to a dish my mom used to make all the time.

She’s the baking/food QUEEN!

Remember the spicy/savory/wonderful Chex mix that had Worchestershire sauce and garlic and heaven in it?  This tastes like that, just better.  Better because it has more of that awesome flavor and you don’t have to put up with the Chex pieces that don’t get the mixture on them.  And better because I said so…go make this and you’ll see why!

All you need are 4.5 ingredients and you’re done.  4.5 ingredients?  What does that even mean? Basically it means I’m only counting salt as half an ingredient.  Because it’s Wednesday.  And because I can 🙂

These are so addictive it’s a shock that I’ve only eaten half of the batch, most of which was right when it came out of the oven.  It was totally worth not tasting my food for days because of a burned tongue.

SMOKED PECANS

  • 2 cups whole pecans
  • 2 Tbsp canola oil
  • 2 Tbsp liquid smoke
  • 2 Tbsp Worchestershire sauce
  • salt

Preheat oven to 275.  Dump pecans in a bowl and dump the oil, liquid smoke, and Worchestershire sauce on top.  Stir to combine.  Pour onto a sheet pan sprayed with nonstick spray.  Roast at 275 for 25-30 minutes, stirring 3-4 times.  When they’re done, remove from oven and lightly sprinkle with salt.  Enjoy

We used to make massive batches of these growing up to put in holiday gift plates for friends, teachers, co-workers, and neighbors…but I’ll always remember that we saved an extra amount for us 🙂

I have yet to try it with butter, so I’m not sure if it would burn or not. Worth a shot though!

Two questions do they have to be raw ? And does this recipe work with walnuts? Thanks!

The nuts do have to be raw. And I haven’t tried walnuts, although I’m sure they would be delicious!

I love flavored/roasted/toasted/baked nuts. I’m with you, though – I used to hate pecans and walnuts, too! Now I love them both. Almonds probably win my heart but rosemary cashews are a favorite, too. I need to make these to share with my fam.

These sound great. I’ve never used liquid smoke for fear of burning my eyebrows off, though.

Also, I think salt is a freebie. If you’ve ever watched Five Ingredient Fix on the Food Network you know that salt and pepper never count toward your five ingredients. 😉

haha, i don’t think liquid smoke would burn off your eyebrows…you’re not supposed to light it on fire 🙂

Not sure if I used the wrong kind of liquid smoke or not, but mine do not taste good at all. I used Colgin Liquid Smoke, Natural Pecan flavor. They have a chemical taste.
What is the brand of liquid smoke that you all are using?

Hey Terri! I’m so sorry yours didn’t work out. I usually use Colgin, Hickory flavor, and it works great. Maybe the pecan version is the issue?
