Simple Apple Crisp

Double whammy today!  Check out Faces of Beauty for Tina’s post, or you can check out her blog for Day 2 of 30DSLR!

Now y’all, I know I’ve been baking a lot lately.  Tell me about it, I’ve gone through more sugar and butter in the past couple of weeks than I EVER thought possible.

I promise to get you some savory dishes soon.  I mean, it’s almost the weekend and we’re throwing a football kick-off party.  Savory is what it’s all about!

Til then we’ll just have to deal with simple apple crisp. Hope that’s OK 😉

SIMPLE APPLE CRISP

FOR THE APPLES:

  • 2 apples (I used red delicious, but Granny Smith would be great!)
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice

FOR THE CRISP

  • 1.5 cups oatmeal
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 stick butter, melted

So, as you can see above, I peeled the apples.  I normally don’t do that but I find the skin on Red Delicious to be tougher than most, so I peeled it this time.  Chop the apples into 1/2 inch pieces.  Also preheat your over to 350.

Add your sugar:

Add the spice!

Lemon juice that sucker, and then stir it all together.  Pour into a greased (I used nonstick spray) 8 x 8 pan.  Rinse and towel dry the bowl…fewer dishes to really wash because I’m lazy like that.

In the bowl combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon for the crumble topping.

Pour in the melted butter.  Have I mentioned yet that I love butter?

Stir together and then crumble on top of the apples.  Bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

The result is tender apples that still have great texture and a buttery, amazing crumble topping.  My only regret is that I didn’t have any ice cream to top this with!

Now, I’m really going to try to stop using butter this next week.  You know, just to see if I can make it.

Heather we are so on the same wavelength! I just went to the store this morning to get ingredients for a gluten-free version of my Aunt’s crisp recipe. I’m using peaches since they were on sale and since it’s still hot as all get up in Philly;)

I loooooove apple crisp. I’ve never been a pie fan, crisp all the way!

Compared to pie, it’s health food right? Less butter, more apple, oats. Healthy! Riiiiiight???

Delicious. Apple crisp is one of my all time favorite desserts. Simple and rustic.

As to the butter, I’m of the opinion that everyone would be a little bit happier if they involved more butter in their life. Just saying 😉
