Sex Party

This weekend I went to a sex party.  Actually, I went just a couple hours after church.

Sex party?  Oh, yeah, it’s a shindig where friends and family gather together to find out the sex of a couple’s baby.

Get your mind out of the gutter.

Our friends Robbie and Stefanie had the sonogram on Tuesday that revealed the gender of their baby, but rather than finding out then they elected to have a party to share the news with everyone!  And guess who made the cupcakes that had the hidden gender color inside?!

That’s right.  Yours truly.

I love being in the know.

Apparently other people have these parties in the Northwest and call them “gender reveal parties,” but let’s get serious:  sex party is so much more hilarious.  And raunchy.  And all things fun.

You tell me, which would YOU rather go to?

We had snacks – pigs-in-a-blanket, cheese and crackers, crudite platters, Red Vines (the best!), and of course cupcakes.  Yum 🙂

The happy couple could hardly wait!  I’m surprised they didn’t look all week…I would have been WAY too curious and cheated.  Patience with surprises isn’t really my strong suit.

Also, beer.  Lots of beer.  Totally normal, totally necessary.

Anyway, it’s amazing how many people will try to get you to crack when you know something they don’t.  I didn’t expect to have to stay as strong as I did…but don’t worry, I’m apparently a very good liar.  Or secret-keeper.  I prefer secret-keeper.

The way it all worked was the guests had to dress in the color they thought the baby would be.  This is the boy group:

And this is the girl group…I think it’s obvious what everyone thought it would be!

And if that picture didn’t give it away, I think these shoes would.  Holy moly, I can’t imagine even trying to walk in these bad boys!  All I see are visions of my face meeting the floor and laughter rising up all around me.  Not that this is from experience…it’s just what I’ve heard from – err – a friend.

On the baking front, the cupcakes were super simple.  I used a box mix for the base (chocolate fudge), and for the icing I combined 2 sticks of room temperature butter, 4 cups of powdered sugar, a box of vanilla pudding mix, and about 3-4 Tbsp of milk.  Just mix til it’s the consistency you want!  Then I took a paring knife and whittled out a well in 5 of the cupcakes.  I used food coloring to color a little bit of the icing that would go in the wells, and then piped all of the cupcakes with the yellow-ish icing.  Easy peasy!

And now for the big moment!  Robbie is telling us he doesn’t have any idea what it could be, but that he’s super excited to find out.  That’s paraphrased.

They now have the cupcake that will reveal what they’re having!  I don’t know how they waited this long…

And….

…it’s a….

BOY!!!!

I think they really shocked everyone on this one…I know when I was opening the sonogram envelope I thought it would say “girl” in there too!  But I know that they’re just excited either way to just have a sweet little one in their lives.

So, what do you think?  Would you ever have a sex party?  How would you have everyone find out? I know when we have kids, Nate and I want to find out the gender together at the doctor’s office, but think it would be fun to have a party where everyone else finds out what the baby is!  We’ll probably make a cake with a layer of gender-colored frosting in the middle and then everyone will find out when they cut into it 🙂

This is so absolutely adorable. Theme parties (besides toga parties in college) seem to have been a forgotten tradition…at least among my friends. It’s so cool to see something so creative like this.
    Congrats to your friends!

That is a fabulous idea and one I have never heard of. It would be a nice surprise…but I couldn’t wait on that one. I would be sneaking a cupcake out back and rip it open as soon as you got there. lol

Um, I think it’s a totally awesome idea!!! I’m also thrilled you had booze at the party– too many people think you have to have a dry baby shower and that’s SO not true! SO creative on your part! Great photos, too!!

This was a great idea! My youngest daughter Laura and her husband Nick are expecting their 2nd child in August. I think this would be a great way to get all the other friends and relatives involved. Simple but lots of fun!! Thanks for sharing.

I’ve never heard of these parties before- maybe we don’t do them in Canada? However that is a totally fun way to announce the sex of your baby, an excuse to eat food, drink beer, along with an element of surprise? Yes, please!
Nice job on the cupcakes, now I’m seriously craving a cupcake!

What a cute idea! I wish I would have heard of a “gender reveal party” when we were still having babies. Although, I’d have better luck getting my Hubby excited for it if I called it a “Sex Party.” Geez–just typing that makes me feel mischievous.

To tell me coworkers about my pregnancy I made cupcakes and made half with pink writing on it saying “girl?” and the other half said “boy?” in blue. It took them a few seconds to get it, but it was a fun way to announce 🙂

I like the idea of a sex party 🙂

What a fun party! I’ve heard of these, but I love the twist about the guest wearing the color they think the baby will be. Too cute. I’m with you – Billy and I want to find out together at the doctor, but it would be fun to surprise our parents and families with a special cake or cupcakes.

My wife and I had a similar sex party when we found out we were having a son. We invited friends and family, some of the guests included my grandparents, who to this day still tell ALL of their friends about “there grandsons sex party that they were invited to”.

I have never heard of this idea but what a GREAT one! I don’t know how they waited either…there is no way that I could have. And kudos to you for keeping a secret. I can not keep a secret. It’ a fact…no one tells me ANYTHING because I will slip. I don’t do it on purpose but I someone always manage to say exactly what I am supposed to be hiding. The hubs loves it because I am virtually an open book and can’t hide anything.
