Paleo Chocolate Chip Bread is a tender, delicious bread that’s healthy enough to eat any time of day. Enjoy first thing in the morning with a cup of hot coffee, or after dinner as the perfect little treat!
I didn’t say much about it on social media or anything this weekend, but Nate and I celebrated 12 years of marriage on Sunday. It’s amazing how it literally feels like we just got married yesterday, but how I also don’t really remember me before him…and I don’t want to!
Our wedding was so fun, and while I tell newly engaged friends all the time that I would have done a few things differently, the reality is that it was just so perfectly us. We had a gorgeous, yummy cake for me and Nate – being the chocolate chip cookie fiend that he is – decided to have a platter of chocolate chip cookies in lieu of a groom’s cake. I remember when we told our parents we were doing that and they thought we were crazy. Maybe we were! But it was one of the most well-received parts of the whole wedding reception!
These days we’re working constantly on making healthier choices in our eating habits, and let me tell you that learning and re-learning discipline in this area is hard when you love food as much as we do. I’m so thankful that there are so many great resources out there sharing ingredients and inspiration to make food delicious and better for us. One thing I just can’t get over is how much I love baking with almond flour over just about any other kind of flour! Don’t get me wrong – I still love the magic of baking with yeast and all-purpose flour – but the texture of almond flour is just so darn hearty and delicious. It pairs well with sweet and savory dishes and lends a subtle sweetness and a great chew when baked into treats.
Another thing I love? I love that there are options like coconut sugar (which I recommend for this recipe) and xylitol (another great option if you need things to be even more sugar free). I try not to train us to expect sweet things all the time, but once in a while it sure is nice to have a treat that I know is better for us!
This paleo chocolate chip bread is a homage to my wedding day, a tribute to my incredible husband, and something I think we could all stand to eat more of. I hope you enjoy!
(A few cook’s notes):
- If you’re on the keto diet you can sub out the applesauce for the same amount of coconut oil or grassfed butter to up the fat content;
- I love Lily’s chocolate chips (not sponsored) to decrease the sugar, but another great brand that does contain sugar is Enjoy Life (it’s also allergen-free);
- Obviously coconut sugar is still sugar, so if you’re need super low-carb or sugar-free it’s best to use a granulated sweetener like erythritol (Swerve is the brand I like – not sponsored)
- You could certainly use any kind of almond meal, but if it’s not a super fine grind then the texture will be different – not as bread-like. It will still be delicious though!
- The tapioca starch can be subbed for arrowroot or even corn (which won’t make it paleo anymore); some kind of starch is necessary to keep the chocolate from sinking to the bottom though!

It’s my first time baking Paleo and disappointedly this recipe is unclear.
Ingredients shows “1/2 cup coconut sugar OR other granulated sweetener”, but no mention on when and where to add it.
Please confirm.
Thank you,
Franca.

Hey Franca,
Again, sorry for the confusion. I’ve updated the post, but you should add the coconut sugar or sweetener with the applesauce and eggs (it’s part of the wet ingredients like regular sugar would be in a more traditional baking recipe)

Baking powder or baking soda?
Your ingredients list says 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder, but your instructions say”combine the almond flour, baking soda and sea salt”. Which is it?

Thanks for bringing that to my attention – should be baking powder in the instructions as well.
