Hockey Night

Hockey.  That sport that no one really plays in the heart of West Texas.  The sport that I am completely clueless about.  That one where it’s cold and you have to wear a jacket to go watch it…INDOORS.

When does the first down happen?

Nate and I were lucky enough to get 2 really great seats to the hockey game last night between the Colorado Avalanche and the Chicago Blackhawks.  We decided to hit up the concession stand and split a cheesesteak sandwich and fries:

And then made our way out to the rink – I guess that’s what it’s called?  A rink instead of a field or court?  Believe it or not I actually pride myself on being athletic and having a good understanding of sports in general…but throw this Texas girl in a hockey arena/rink/game(???).  Awkwardness can occur.

We smiled and took pictures of ourselves in our favorite hats (because everyone wears hats post-workout):

And within a minute the score was 2-1 Avalanche.  Apparently that’s a big deal…all I know is it was loud when the guys were slamming one another into the glass.

There was also a fight, which I learned has “rules” to it…

Know what I really think?  I think they just draw straws at the beginning of the game to see who’s going to fight in the middle of it.  Because that’s what keeps the crowds coming.  Just a little inference of mine…

And really, when it comes down to it, fights are weird and make me uncomfortable.  Especially when they seem fake.  AWKWARD…

Despite me feeling out of place in an arena filled with screaming hockey fans, we had an absolutely awesome time!

Especially when these mini-donuts came to play.  Now that’s my kind of game!

The Avs won in the end, which meant many happy fans on the way out to the car!  I’d say it was a successful night of hockey firsts…

…now, when’s the first down?

Hockey is huge in MN… mostly because we are a frozen tundra for almost half the year! But there is definitely strategy to the fights. The fighters are called “Goons.” They are usually on the ice to protect the talent (the good players) and the goalie. If a player from the other team gets chippy the goon will most likely “send a message” by doing a little rough housing himself which usually results in a fight. Probably more information than you needed to know….. 🙂

I’ve only been to one hockey game and I have to say it was the most boring game I’ve ever been too! It took forever to score for some reason and there were no fights at all (isn’t that why most people go)? Not that I wanted people to fight, of course, but anything would have been more exciting than watching no one score! 🙂

Y’all are so cute!! My 1st (unofficial) date with Billy was a Dallas Stars hockey game and we had so much fun! I agree with you about the aggression and the fights – a bit over the top but entertaining nevertheless.

I watched the highlights on this game earlier this morning. A million times. Because since we won the Stanley Cup, they really overdo the Blackhawks news. It’s a little out of control…. lol

My boyfriend loves it and grew up playing it. It has to be better in person than on T.V.! I totally don’t get it and can’t get into it either. Haha, when’s the first down?!
