True story: these cookies have 3 ingredients. The end.
I mean guys, 3 whole entire ingredients. That means after about 2 minutes of mixing and 10 minutes of baking you have fresh hot fudgy awesome cookies that will make everyone around you jump for joy.
Or, you know, from a sugar high. Whatever. They’re jumping though, and it’s because of you!
This recipe stemmed from a donation to the Heather’s Dish household of both a box of cake mix and a tub of frosting. As much as I adore a good cake (and yes, I believe good cake can come from a box mix), it’s just dangerous to have an entire cake hanging out in my kitchen. It stares me down until I grab a fork, and then it’s all over. Much better to go the cookie route and pretend like I didn’t eat 15 of them before sending them off to work with Nate.
Oh wait. I said that out loud didn’t I?
Oops 🙂
CAKE AND FROSTING COOKIES
- 1 box (18.25 oz) Devil’s Food (or other chocolate) cake mix
- 1 can (16 oz) chocolate frosting
- 1 whole egg
Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl and combine until well mixed. I recommend refrigerating the dough for about 30 minutes so you can roll the dough into balls (makes for prettier cookies), but you can certainly just drop and bake at room temperature as well. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Fudgy, dense, uber-chocolatey and did I mention easy? I’ll take it!

These look good! I love bar cookies. What if you spread this in a pan? I might experiment and try it!
Heather says
Oooooooooooooooh…I think I’d probably sit that pan on my lap and eat it all with a spoon!

Erin @ The Spiffy Cookie says
Brilliant! It reminds me of a post Cakespy did about adding the frosting to the prepared cake mix before baking.
Heather says
oooooh, frosting IN the cake batter?! that’s genius!
Kim in MD says
Isn’t that what this is? You are mixing the frosting in the cake batter with the egg, correct? Thanks!
Heather says
well, i think what Erin was saying is that this other blogger (Cakespy) actually made the cake batter and then mixed the frosting into the cake batter. These cookies are literally just the dry cake mix, the frosting, and the egg – no cake batter required!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
Wow – they look amazingly chewy too, which is pretty much the only thing I ask of a good cookie!

I was sold at 3 ingredients!
